Candidates Round 9

Two decisive games this round, with the big surprise being Gelfand (white) over Aronian. What started out as a typical Queen’s Gambit Declined looks like it transposed into a Stonewall (a staple of club players everywhere). Gelfand then displayed nice rook endgame technique, and ground out the win in 60 moves. In lieu of a diagram, here’s the complete game.

Yes this was a mild upset and a costly defeat for Aronian. Kramnik came out of the opening better vs Carlsen but could not find that knock out punch. Carlsen in good shape to win and challenge Anand later this year. Of course it ain’t over till the fat lady sings. Well we do not have any fat ladies at the club at this point.
