Starting on Monday, September 9th, will be the strongest tournament ever to take place in the US. It is a four player double round-robin, featuring the top 2 players in the world (by rating), Magnus Carlsen (who will be fighting for the World Championship in a couple months) and Levon Aronian. The other two participants are the top 2 players in the US, Hikaru Nakamura and Gata Kamsky.
An event like this would not be possible without the deep pockets of a chess benefactor; in this case Rex Sinquefield, millionaire and founder of the St. Louis Chess Club. The prize money totals $170,000, with $70,000 going to the winner.
The event should have a good presence online, and those fortunate enough to live in the St. Louis area will be able to watch US chess history unfold. I know I’ll be checking the site during the week – although I will try to be discreet about it at work.
Who do you think will win the event? The initial easy answer is Carlsen, but will he be giving 100% given that he is facing Anand soon? Regardless, there should be interesting games and I doubt there will be many short draws.
