In honor of the US victory over Russia today

Courtesy of Ernie comes this article from Sports Illustrated, from 1970, detailing the USSR vs the Rest of the World 10 player team match, billed as the Match of the Century.

The Russian team featured 5 current (Spassky) and former (Petrosian, Botvinnik, Smyslov, Tal) world champions, and were the heavy favorites.

On the world side was Bent Larsen as board one (only because Bobby Fischer, board 2, had been essentially inactive for 2 years of top flight chess and agreed to give up the top board to the lower rated Larson). Samuel Reshevsky was the only other American player, at board 6.

The USSR did win the match, but only by 1 point (and it could have easily been drawn).

Wikipedia has more information, and you can play over all the games here.

Speaking of history, I came across this picture while researching this match, although the picture does not come from the match (it is from 1921). Can you identify the boy and man?

Hint: One of them played in the match
